The Mass was celebrated in the side chapel dedicated to St Dominic. I found this celebration and memorial to be very reverent and beautiful. Despite not being able to follow the Latin (as it was my first time at a Dominican Rite Mass)\, the relatively long periods of silence and Latin chant throughout the liturgy created a reflective and prayerful atmosphere. The Homily was very thought-provoking: reminding us that a requiem Mass can be a very positive way to come together to pray for the dead and help us to heal the pains we can feel for their loss. \nAfter Mass we went back into the church hall to have Domino’s Pizza (what a treat!) and plenty of hot tea and coffee on what was a rainy November day. Being a Catholic in healthcare can be very isolating so the social elements of these CMA events are always a highlight for many of us. \nWe then had a wonderful talk on ‘The Last Four Things’ by Fr George Roth\, a Marian Franciscan Friar from Gosport. This was an excellent and enthusiastic talk by a very knowledgeable speaker. There was also ample opportunity for Q&As afterwards. \nAfter the talk we went into the Rosary shrine to pray the Joyful Mysteries\, with each mystery being prayed in its respectively themed side chapel. This was a very beautiful moment of prayerful pilgrimage together. Afterwards we went back to the church hall for further refreshments. \nAs a junior doctor I felt very refreshed and encouraged by this wonderful and nourishing event. The CMA’s youth branch are grateful to the Rosary Shrine and Latin Mass Society for their support and sponsorship of this event. The aim will be to provide support to young people through experiencing an oasis of prayer away from our busy work lives. Inspired by the motto ‘the family that prays together stays together’ this is chosen as the theme. (The photo shows Fr Patrick Peyton who coined this motto). \nPlanning \nDiscussions are held with the Dominicans at the Shrine to the Rosary in London who agree to host the retreat and the Latin Mass Society who agree to sponsor and provide a choir for a Dominican rite Missa Cantata (sung Mass). \nHundreds of hours of planning go in to organising the day. Speakers are organised\, a timetable put together and edited many times. Food is ordered to be delivered on the day. Posters are made to decorate the room\, and new sound equipment is bought. The vignette of the event appears in the newsletters of many churches including Westminster Cathedral and the Oxford Oratory. \n \nAdvertising \nFlyers are printed and distributed to the young people at the 3rd annual CMA youth conference to take back to their parishes. An Eventbrite page is designed to allow people to book their place. \n \nOn the day \nThe CMA’s Committee for the New Evangelization arrive early to iron out any last-minute problems. We are excited. The event is fully booked – all 105 tickets! \nHelpers arrive at 9am to start preparing the hall for the event. The food arrives: including 400 sandwich quarters and 19 packets of biscuits! 100 chairs are put out and the room decorated. \nHoly Mass begins at 11:30am at the altar of the Rosary Shrine church. \nThe Mass is offered for living members of the Catholic Medical Association. \n \nAfter Mass \nThe attendees enter the parish hall and sign in\, receiving a welcome pack which includes flyers of other events\, prayer cards\, a timetable for the day and a feedback form. \nThen the attendees enjoy lunch and plenty of discussion. \nAll but a few of the 400 slices of sandwich are gone! \n \nTalk 1: ‘The Family that Prays Together Stays Together’: The Life and Work of Fr Patrick Peyton \nFriar Philomeno from the Marian Franciscans in Gosport delivers a passionate call to prayer and devotion to Our Lady in the spirit of Venerable Fr Patrick Peyton\, who was also known as the Rosary Priest. Images of Fr Peyton adorn the walls of the hall\, and the audience are shown two videos of Fr Peyton. \n \nTalk 2: Caring for my Dying Father by a young nurse \nA young nurse delivers a very moving presentation on caring for her dying father\, and what she learnt from this. She tells us: it is the Catholic family’s duty to pray for their dying family member. \n \nRosary Procession \nWe walk from the hall into the church to crowd into the side chapels to pray the joyful mysteries of the Rosary. The Rosary Shrine has fifteen side chapels: one for each mystery of the rosary (the luminous mysteries will soon be represented in a beautiful Marian garden). \n \nSalve Regina \nAt the end of the Rosary we process to the Lady altar to sing the Salve Regina at the tops of our voices! \nThen there are tours of the shrine\, an opportunity for confession\, some quiet time in the church and plenty of refreshments. \n \nTalk 3: Catholic Manhood \nAfter plenty of tea\, coffee and biscuits\, Sam from Catholic Man UK delivers a beautiful talk on what it means to be a Catholic Man. \n \nTalk 4: Catholic Femininity \nA young teacher presents us with an inspiring vision of what it means to be a Catholic woman in the modern world. \nFollowing this\, the retreat is over. There is a lot of mingling and swapping contact details before the helpers tidy the room away and keys to the room are handed back. \n \nPost Event \nHowever\, for the Committee and it’s helpers the work is not over: feedback forms need to be analysed for improvements to be made for next time\, thank you letters sent out (especially to the convents who always pray for us on the day of our events)\, the money needs to be counted and taken to the bank. \nMost of all we need to thank God for a wonderful day enjoyed by all! \nPlans for the upcoming 4th annual CMA youth conference and next year’s retreat are already underway! \nSt Camillus\, pray for us! \n  \nWhat our attendees said about the event:\nGreat! It is easy to lose hope when you are alone but these events renew one’s vigour and charges the spiritual batteries for the battles ahead. \nI feel so blessed to be able to see such a reverent rite for our Lord! Talks were useful\, moving\, inspiring and educational. I loved and enjoyed each one of them. All I received today I will keep in my heart. To follow ‘the way of Life’ involves following Him who is the source and giver of life\, whereas to follow ‘the way of Death’ is to follow him who deceives: who promises that which he does not have the power to give (cf Mt 4:9-11). \nThe aim of the conference was to present Catholic culture as a comprehensive alternative to the secular culture of death. This was inspired by Pope John Paul II’s description of a culture of life at odds with a culture of death. This modern culture of death involves many bioethical issues such as marriage\, abortion etc. However\, the Catholic culture of life is joyful\, and it is the recipe to living ‘the good life’ and obtaining the beatific vision. Furthermore\, Catholics in healthcare have a critical role to play in the building up of a culture of life. Mass was celebrated by Fr Serafino Lanzetta (of the Marian Franciscans) in the crypt of Tyburn Convent. The LMS organised a server and a small choir for the occasion. Tyburn\, once the site at which many of the martyrs were hanged is now home to the National Shrine of the Martyrs of England and Wales. It seemed particularly fitting to hear the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the older form of the Roman Rite here as this is the Mass the martyrs risked their lives to say and hear. \nThe following is a report from a young medical student who attended: \nThe Blood of the Martyrs is the Seed of the Church\n“On the 10th March 2018 the CMA hosted a day conference for young healthcare professionals at Tyburn Convent. The conference started with Mass in the Extraordinary Form\, complete with Gregorian chant\, a wonderful opportunity to expose young professionals to a beautiful celebration of the Mass they may seldom have encountered in their own parishes. \nIn the first talk of the conference\, one of the Tyburn nuns reminded us of the historical precedents of conscientious objection in a fascinating and moving account of the lives of the Tyburn martyrs. Her talk was a reminder of three important facts: firstly\, whilst we may feel challenged at times\, our lives are not literally on the line; secondly\, the battle has already been won\, just as the blood of the martyrs is now glorified\, so will our small battles give way to glory in the future; lastly\, we have the prayers of so many religious (and lay) people around the world to support us in our endeavours to do what is right. \nThe ensuing discussion on conscience was thus set up in the context of eternity and placed us in a humbling lineage of figures now gone before us\, who had remained true to their convictions to the last – the martyrs of course\, but also more contemporary figures such as Dr Jerome Lejeune who fought so voraciously to defend the rights of people with Down’s Syndrome. The two talks on conscience\, delivered by Dr Joseph Shaw from the Anscombe Bioethics Centre and Mr John Smeaton from SPUC provided us with a thorough philosophical and practical grounding in the nature of conscience within the healthcare setting\, both what it is\, and perhaps more importantly\, what it is not. The day ended with a panel discussion enabling the attendees to enquire about some of the practicalities raised by the talks and so engage directly with the speakers. The Q&A session also provided the opportunity for various professionals from the floor to offer their insights\, demonstrating the diverse range of knowledge and experience present at such a meeting. \nOverall\, the day was a great success and it was a real privilege to listen to such fantastic speakers in such a beautiful and apt venue.  Many thanks to the Tyburn nuns for their hospitality and prayers\, they are\, of course\, assured of ours. Having had a quick glance at the programme before arriving\, I had imagined that the conference would entail a series of talks\, each portraying an individual’s compassionate commitment to the care of others whilst perhaps also providing information on how best to navigate certain tricky ethical situations as Catholics. The speakers were not\, however\, simply inspirational professionals who happened to be practicing Catholics and had plenty of practical advice to offer\, rather\, they were individuals who were actively putting God at the centre of their lives and responding to their personal call to love Him by serving the infirm. \nDr Swee Ang spoke about seeing the face of Christ in the faces of children whilst working in war-torn territories\, and a young nurse encouraged us to re-evaluate the job (or even vocation) of a nurse given it’s contemporary roots in the order of the Daughters of Charity. Later in the afternoon\, Mary Doogan\, a midwife\, explained that she would always pray before ever setting foot in the labour ward. The Mother Superior of the Little Sisters of the Poor spoke beautifully about the lives of the sisters working in care homes\, their days rooted in prayer and dedicated to showing love to the elderly they serve. All these testimonies highlighted to me how vital it is for all of us to be open to God’s calling us in unexpected directions throughout our lives. It is extremely easy to fall into the trap of planning out one’s career in detail or at least of ruling out certain paths which don’t seem to fit into our fixed vision of our futures. \nAs young healthcare professionals\, we left the conference with renewed energy and wonderful friendships\, but perhaps most importantly\, with the determination to keep God at the heart of our work. St Vincent de Paul is reported to have said: “Do not limit your vision any longer to yourself\, but see the Lord around you and in you\, ready to put his hand to the work as soon as you ask for His help. We heard an expose of Pope Saint John Paul II’s encyclical Evangelium Vitae\, reflections on the sacrament of marriage\, as well as the challenges and joys of being a midwife\, and the ethical intricacies encountered as a GP. \nWe were a truly multi-disciplinary bunch: in attendance were nurses\, doctors\, midwives\, physios\, pharmacists and students of all the above. \nAbove all\, we were blessed to share in the fellowship of other Catholic healthcare professionals\, enjoying some good food and meaningful conversation. \n \nTestimonials\n“…one of the most enjoyable things about this meeting for me was being able to meet other Catholic medical professionals\, particularly Catholic doctors who I could chat to and learn about their experiences so far.” \nI was reminded of “the importance of individuals working in healthcare staying true to their beliefs while at the same time being lawful\, respectful and compassionate to others.”  – A young nurse \nRegarding the talk by the young midwife: “[it] was especially moving.
